1.Preparing activity 2.Interview with Ms. Yueh-e Li Weng 3.Interview with Cheng-chang Chiu

III. Make an appointment with Mr. Cheng-chang Chiu, the Chief of Luzhou Service Center, Taiwan Power Company

Students are making notes carefully!

1. Question design for the second interview
With the experience in the first interview, we began to design questions for the second interview. First of all, we discussed the questions to be asked and then wrote them down. After the group discussion, the suitable questions were sorted out and repetitive or inappropriate ones were deleted. Finally, the interview questions we would like to ask on that day were listed. For further understanding of electromagnetic wave, we decided to have an interview with Mr. Cheng-chang Chiu in Wednesday afternoon and hoped that he could answer the questions discussed by us one after another and resolve our confusion for electromagnetic wave.

*Knowledge related to electromagnetic wave
1. In terms of drier, electric fan, microwave oven, mobile phone and television, whose electromagnetic wave is the strongest, why?
2. Will the intensity of electromagnetic wave in the same products depend on watt? Or are there any other methods to distinguish it?
3. How to measure electromagnetic wave for these electrical appliances?
4. [Reducing electromagnetic wave by 90%] is indicated on the drier. Isn’t the effect of drier’s electromagnetic wave the biggest? Why is there so much difference between drier and other electrical appliances in electromagnetic wave?

II. Records for the second interview:
Date: November 2, 2016 Wednesday 14:00~16:00
Location: Situation Classroom, Research Building, Lu Jiang Elementary School

Record:

Mr. Cheng-chang Chiu is explaining how to use a magnetometer.

Director Wu is narrating carefully how the electricity is transmitted from power station.

Pin-han

Today, we went to school and prepared to interview Mr. Cheng-chang Chiu about the questions related to electric tower and electromagnetic wave. This was the second time for us to have an interview and the interviewees for this time include Mr. Cheng-chang Chiu, Director Wu and an engineer. In the first interview with Ms. Yueh-e Li Weng, the City Councilor, the notes were not taken completely due to slower writing, so I took a mobile photo this time to record the whole interview process and then I can listen to it repeatedly until I have understood it.

Chieh-yun

The interview began and all of us asked questions one after another. When it was my turn to ask a question, my invoice was not loud enough because Mr. Cheng-chang Chiu had to intentionally get close to me to listen to the question clearly. Subsequently, I also found that my questions were not complete and the time was limited, so Teacher Chiu-yun Chi helped us ask the latter questions. Next, Mr. Cheng-chang Chiu took out a magnetometer and show to us how to measure the electromagnetic wave value with it. After the measurement, we found that the instrument around us has lower electromagnetic wave value.

The second interview has come to an end quickly! Surprisingly, they said that Taiwan Power Company had not taken any prevention measures so as not to reassure residents. To my surprise, the staffs in Taiwan Power Company are exposed to the magnetic field with 4000 mG every day. Now, I have finally known why we research electromagnetic wave. The social public still holds the skepticism towards electromagnetic wave, so it is necessary to explain it clearly. In this way, the residents will not take to streets to protest any more.

Mr. Cheng-chang Chiu is actually operating a magnetometer for us and everyone feels it novel.

Mr. Cheng-chang Chiu is explaining how to use a magnetometer.

Mr. Cheng-chang Chiu is measuring computer with a magnetometer to see the electromagnetic wave value of the computer.

Mr. Cheng-chang Chiu is measuring the electromagnetic wave value of light switch with a magnetometer.

*Knowledge about electromagnetic wave

1-1
Q:In terms of drier, electric fan, microwave oven, mobile phone and television, whose electromagnetic wave is the strongest, why?
A: Drier has the strongest electromagnetic wave because the electricity transmits around the coil and the intensity of magnetic field is large due to the large current near the motor.

1-2
Q: How to measure electromagnetic wave for these electrical appliances?
A: They are all measured with a magnetometer (including one-axis and tri-axis magnetometer). A suitable place is required for measurement. In addition, the value will fall down when it is measured in a long distance.

1-3
Q: [Reducing electromagnetic wave by 90%] is indicated on the drier. Isn’t the effect of drier’s electromagnetic wave the biggest? Why is there so much difference between drier and other electrical appliances in electromagnetic wave?
A: In electric field. There must be voltage and it is difficult to isolate the current in that electric field. As long as the object with magnetic conductibility is used, half of the current in the electric field can be isolated.

1-4
Q: The method of preventing electromagnetic wave is nothing but keeping distance and reducing usage time. Is the product preventing electromagnetic wave effective or is it necessary to use such product? (It is flaunted by many products available in the market that they can prevent electromagnetic wave)

A: There is no need to use it.

1-5
Q: Does electromagnetic wave have effect on animals? If any, what problems will it cause?
A: It needs to be approved by WHO as it may cause childhood leukemia.

1-6
Q: How do the staffs in Taiwan Power Company usually do to prevent electromagnetic wave during work time?

A: No prevention is done.

1-7
Q: In terms of hazard on human body, what’s the difference between low frequency electromagnetic wave and high frequency electromagnetic wave? (Is it related to rate of frequency?)

A: High frequency electromagnetic wave will fly in all directions and have strong penetrability due to higher values. Relatively, the low frequency electromagnetic wave is very weak and will not fly in all directions.
Mr. Cheng-chang Chiu is measuring the drier with a magnetometer and students are observing the electromagnetic wave value from a long or short distance. Mr. Cheng-chang Chiu is explaining the website of Taiwan Power Company, and we can find the contents of website of Taiwan Power Company immediately in the future.

* Problems related to transformer station and electric tower

2-1
Q: What’s the difference between indoor and outdoor transformer station?

A: The indoor and outdoor transformer station differ in power, but the outdor transformer station is relatively not beautiful in appearance as it is not fenced; the indoor transformer station costs more money as materials need to be purchased to fence it up.

2-2
Q: Approximately, how much is the intensity of electromagnetic wave for telegraph pole, utility box, high voltage tower and transformer station?

A: Utility box>transformer station>high voltage tower> telegraph pole.

2-3
Q: What measures did Taiwan Power Company take to reduce electromagnetic wave near the telegraph pole, utility box, high voltage tower and transformer station?
A: Taiwan Power Company has not taken any prevention measures against these facilities.

2-4
Q: What’s the range of the safety specification of electromagnetic wave? (Electrical appliances, utility box, transformer station and electric tower)
A: Safety value of electromagnetic wave in Taiwan:
 (1) 833 mG for common people

 (2) 4300 mG for working personnel

2-5
Q: Has Taiwan Power Company ever taken any education measures to make residents understand the knowledge related to electromagnetic wave or reduce residents’ doubt for electromagnetic wave?

A: There are many education measures in the official website of Taiwan Power Company: http://www.taipower.com.tw/

2-6
Q: Will electromagnetic wave really cause brain tumor, leukemia and other diseases?

A: It may cause leukemia and other diseases, but the correlation cannot be found. WHO and International Association for Cancer Research (IARC) have classified electromagnetic wave into possibly carcinogenic to humans (Grade 2B).

* Questions related to the struggles against high voltage transformer station in Luzhou

3-2
Q: May I ask why extra high voltage transformer station was still built in the past although many people were against it?
A: It is built due to the need for power supply in Luzhou.

3-4
Q: Where do the three transformer stations in Luzhou supply the power?

A: The power is supplied in the surrounding area of Luzhou.

3-6
Q: Is it possible to integrate all the transformer stations in Luzhou into one in the future?

A: It’s impossible because many important facilities in Luzhou need lots of power, including the power utilization in MRT and in district. We have no other choice.

3-9
Q: A network article mentions that the underground cable is much closer to human and its electromagnetic wave has a larger effect on human body. Is it really the case? What’s the difference between overground and underground electric towers? (power supply sufficiency, intensity of electromagnetic wave……)
A: As long as the cables are buried deep enough and far away from human, the intensity of electromagnetic wave will accordingly decline.

3-12
Q: As for Luzhou District, what are the difficulties for the underground of electric towers?
A: There are no difficulties. However, the underground cannot be realized due to insufficient expenditure.

3-14
Q: Will the underground of electric towers in Luzhou continue or may the electric towers be increased in the future?

A: They may be increased in the future, but they will be developed towards underground.

We go to the transformer station with a magnetometer for measurements, feeling a great sense of achievement!

III. Afterthought for the second interview

Yu-hsuan
We have made the adequate preparation for the second interview. On that day, we were so confident to ask the questions designed by ourselves. At the very start, we were very curious about this device which we had never seen before. Then, the working personnel in Taiwan Power Company began to introduce the variety of electromagnetic wave: the first variety is non-ionizing radiation (high and low frequency) which will not damage the cells like mobile phone, etc.; the second variety is ionizing radiation which will damage the cells like X-ray. We also harvested a lot from such explanation. We were also told to keep appropriate distance from electromagnetic wave in our home and reduce the usage time. Only in this way can we avoid the hazard on human body. We did not ask all the questions for lack of time, but I have also learned a lot of knowledge related to electromagnetic wave in daily life within such a short time.
Hsuan-ying

During the process of interview, we have learned a lot of knowledge. For instance, drier has the strongest electromagnetic wave and it is difficult to isolate the current in its magnetic field. So many electric towers have been built to meet the demand of power supply in Luzhou. From the two interviews, I have gradually learned how to integrate a long speech into one or two lines of key points and it is worthwhile. I am looking forward to the subsequent activities and hope everything goes well.

Yu-tung

This is our second interview. During the process of interview, the interviewee -- Mr. Cheng-chang Chiu has given us the quite complete answers to our questions. Mr. Cheng-chang Chiu said that, “all the articles do not have the strong electromagnetic wave”. Some people may not be satisfied with this answer. However, he also said that electromagnetic wave essentially refers to the relationship between “electric field” and “magnetic field”. Of course, we also raised our questions for his statement and he explained to us clearly. We interviewed head of the institute and Mr. Cheng-chang Chiu about various questions and they answered in detail; meanwhile they also taught us how to use a wattmeter. The use of wattmeter is very easy and the electromagnetism of the articles of daily use can be measured easily. This interview makes me understand the knowledge I have never known before, which benefits me a lot.

Ssu-chi

Today, we had an interview with Mr. Cheng-chang Chiu. In the course of interview, I have learned how to measure electromagnetic wave with a magnetometer, namely, you only need take a magnetometer to get close to the article you want to measure. In the end, Mr. Cheng-chang Chiu showed to us how to measure an article. At that time, I began to know that television actually emits very little electromagnetic wave (about 0.5mg), and electric fan emits more electromagnetic wave than our imagination (about 10.3mg). I didn’t know that electromagnetic wave is so frightening until I went through the interview.

Pin-han

Now, I finally know why we need to research electromagnetic wave. The social public still holds the skepticism towards electromagnetic wave, so it is necessary to explain it clearly. In this way, the residents will not take to streets to protest any more. Mr. Cheng-chang Chiu taught us some new knowledge; for example, drier has the strongest electromagnetic wave among all the electrical appliances and it is difficult to isolate the current in its magnetic field. Lots of electric towers are built to meet the demand of power supply in Luzhou City. We have also learned how to prevent electromagnetic wave, how to measure the electrical appliances as well as the classification of electromagnetic waves. I have harvested a lot and the interview process is also very interesting. I have prepared well to fill my brain with various kinds of knowledge! I’m looking forward to our next activity!

Chin-chen

I have learned much knowledge from this interview. Mr. Cheng-chang Chiu answered a lot and I have learned the questions not mentioned in the questionnaire. For instance, electromagnetic wave can also help body give out heat to achieve the effect of perspiration. The specifications published by WHO are different from those in Taiwan because they are formulated according to the actual situations in other 50 surrounding countries. Finally, I feel that I was a little nervous and my voice still trembled slightly when I asked the questions at the beginning of interview although I had ever interviewed Ms. Yueh-e Li Weng, the City Councilor before. I hope that I can improve it!

Yu-an

Today, we came to school and prepared to interview Mr. Cheng-chang Chiu about the questions related to electric tower and electromagnetic wave. At the beginning, he told us many issues about electric tower. When it was my turn to ask a question, I was so nervous that I spoke haltingly. In the first interview with Ms. Yueh-e Li Weng, the City Councilor, I did not make the notes completely due to slow writing. Therefore, I took a mobile photo this time to record the whole interview process and then I can listen to it repeatedly until I have understood it. After the interview, with the explanation of Mr. Cheng-chang Chiu, I can have a better understanding of electromagnetic wave. Now, I feel it less terrible to see the explanation and comments on the internet than before.
