Mapping

 

Mapping means marking the address of sewing workshops that have been searched on the map through computers (Google Map, Photocap). The source of sewing workshops is from the following 2,

  1. 1) In the above “let’s find together” activity, the addresses to be found by Grade 5 students on their way home.
  2. 2) The addresses found through “New Taipei City Commercial Yellowpage”.

 

    • 1. Process of mapping
      It mainly includes the following steps.

      1. 1) Firstly, copy the Luzhou map with Google Map.
      2. 2) Then, load the Luzhou map with Photocap.
      3. 3) The teacher projects the map with a projector on the screen.
      4. 4) We point out the addresses of garment manufacturing around the school.
      5. 5) Mark the addresses and locations of sewing workshops with Photocap.

2. Results of mapping
The result of marking is as follows：

3. Our discovery
According to the map with marks, we have found:

  1. 1) Although we merely locate sewing workshops around the school, we have found that the number of sewing workshops is 16, which can be seen that though the sewing workshops lose their prosperity, their number is not so less as people thought. The only problem is the lack of sufficient attention to them.
  2. 2) The locations of sewing workshops are not intensively distributed in certain areas, but sporadically spread.
  3. 3) The sewing workshops are located in lanes and alleys instead of roadsides.

 

4. Afterthoughts

 We found the locations of sewing workshops situated in the deep lanes and alleys in Luzhou, just like an interesting treasure hunt. However, as to such as road nerd like me, it is like looking for a needle in a sea, so I had to find those hidden sewing workshops with great patience.

I found 2 workshops in Luchiang St. As I live nearby, I pass by them every day. 1 workshop more obvious than the other. Had my father told me I would have never known that there was a sewing workshop. I also used Google street view to search for sewing workshops. I much feel that I am a road nerd, and had no idea where I was. But I think Google street view is very convenient, you do not have to search for road by yourself. All you have to do is do it in front of a computer.

The teachers asked us to find whether there were sewing workshops around the Lu Chiang Elementary School, and gave us Yellowpage for assistant. We tended to use Google map, and searched street by street. I found nothing for quite a long time, thanks to the study sheet handed over to us in the previous publicity activity of class, which supplied data for reference. Finally, we found 16 sewing workshops. With computers, we can go anywhere we want, it is very convenient. However, the use of computer might damage our eyesight.

Although we only found 16 sewing workshops, we know that there are more in other lanes and alleys. As we see that the majority of sewing workshops we found are located in very tiny lanes and alleys, which is why they are not widely known to the people. I feel sympathetic for these sewing workshops as they are separated from the world just because of their hidden locations. I just want to let everyone know from the Cyberfair project that there are many sewing workshops around us that we have not discovered yet.

There are almost 20 sewing workshops and garment factories in Luzhou. Thanks to the developed technology today, we do not have to search for them street by street in Luzhou. All we have to do is use Goodle street view when we need to locate the sewing workshops or garment factories, and very soon the mark on the map will be completed. I find that sewing workshops are hidden in the narrow lanes and alleys. They are not too small in number, just we have not found them, which gives them the name of “twilight industry”.

 In the very beginning, the teachers handed out a Yellowpage to each group, requested us to find the sewing workshops in Luzhou, and confirmed whether they existed or not with Google map. Although there are many booths of sewing workshops in the telephone book, after we actually confirm, we find that most of them have been rented or closed down. There are not too many left. I was wondering when the telephone book was made. However, compared with other cities and counties, we have more workshops here. Sometimes we feel uncomfortable in the eyes during the search, as the words are too small in size and intensive. While sometimes the addresses are missed or misread. All in all, it is laborious and fatigue.

It is indeed very convenient to search for sewing workshops with internet. I was worried that the teachers would take us out to find, the thought of which makes me tired. The task should be completed just with a computer, which is unbelievable and new to me. I am too happy to be in such as society where technology is so developed.

We used Google map and telephone book to search for sewing workshops. I looked like a road nerd in the search, had no idea where I was. What was funnier was that I run to Kenting. It took me a lot to find 1 workshop. However, Google map is really convenient, you do not have to search by yourself, move your fingers in front of a computer, and you can see where the garment factories are. Without such function of the computer, we have to go by ourselves. I am a road nerd even with computers, if in actual search, I might not find my own way home. How advanced is the technology today!

 After this activity, I find that there are a lot sewing workshops in Luzhou area. We believe that there are not too many sewing workshops because we pay insufficient attention in everyday life. And sewing workshops are hidden in the lanes and alleys.

Ya-ting Tsao

 Although the computers are advanced today, I still believe that it feels real if we conduct field search. As a store does not exist in Google map but on the telephone book, we have no idea whether the Google map is too old or the telephone book is not updated. So we cannot be too reliant on the computers.
