Title: Content and experience of calling on shops

1. The fish shopkeeper was very humorous, and willing to accept the interview of children. The shopkeeper chose the trade because it was unconstraint, he himself could be the boss, the most difficult part was he had to get up and prepared to go to the Keelung Fish Market to purchase at half past two in midnight, because if he goes too late he cannot buy fine merchandise. The shopkeeper concluded the difficult business running into the following reasons:

 (1)  It is not a boom year, and difficult to run a business.
 (2)  Too many people sell fish.
 (3)  The modern people mostly eat at outside, they needn’t to buy and cook.
 (4)  The present deities are very thin, because people don’t use oblation, they all serve fruits.

The rather interesting thing the shopkeeper encountered was that “someone steals fish”, the shopkeeper very complacently taught the children a lesson, the shopkeeper told we could not say “ you steal my fish”, we should say “it seems your fish hasn’t paid.” The shopkeeper said the fish with the most DHA is not salmon, but is migration fish, for example “Huihui”(Taiwan accent pronunciation ). This fish is very cheap in  Taiwan, when they left the shopkeeper gave every child a “Huihui”.
The fish shopkeeper has sold fish for about 15 years, the happiest moment is the fish are sold out, counting money until hands ache. The cleaning for one day was NT$50.

2. The daughter of the fish shopkeeper studied in class one grade one of Chenggung Elementary School, because her aunt taught in Chenggung Elementary School , so she studied in Chenggung Elementary School. She began to help her father since she could walk, she could help to snap fish, but she couldn’t calculate money. She liked to help in the market, because she could play around, sometimes she would see her friend, the friend studied in the top class. Today her grandmother also went to help, the grandmother was satisfied with her granddaughter in every way, only felt annoyed she was whining. She said she cried because of toothache, so I by the way told her the importance of tooth cleaning. I found children doing business were rather independent, and had ideas on figures. Two brothers, two sisters, one aunt and one teacher interviewed her, she all remained calm, spoke fluently, clearly express her ideas, totally unfearful, had a manner of a great general.

The daughter of the fish shopkeeper was natural and poised in her style of conversation, her word of one person was more than that of her two brothers and two sisters who interviewed her, she was a very good child.

. 3. The vegetable shopkeeper met us for the second time. The shopkeeper was very humorous and willing to accept the interview, since he planted and sold vegetable with his parents from childhood, so he naturally took the career when grew up. The shopkeeper said the climate in Luchou needs agricultural chemicals, the chemicals in basil, gynura and yam leaves is not much. The most interesting thing the shopkeeper encountered was that “the young lady suddenly threw the Korea  vegetable when she picked it, the reason was she saw the worm ”. What rather toilsome was he had to get up to purchase vegetable at three o’clock in the midnight. Since the markets are scattered, so now it is rather difficult to run the business.
4. Interview on the northern and southern goods. The shopkeeper said he had to do business for a living, at the beginning the goods he sold were rather few, and afterwards it became more and more diversified according to the need of customers. The shopkeeper’s wife found customers became more and more few, so the business was difficult than before. In the early holiday and New Year’ s day the it was packed with people, but after the road was broadened, there became more roadside stalls, the influence of the roadside stall was great, since it didn’t need rent and held up customers, customers were unwilling to buy food in the market. The happiest thing for the shopkeeper’s wife was the prosperous business. The shopkeeper’s wife was very cordial, so I bought bamboo shoot, preserved egg and garlic, the garlic was the most beautiful and expensive I bought in my life, because the shopkeeper’s wife was willing to talk, so we also were willing to spend money.

5. Call on the neighborhood chief. The neighborhood chief said the Luchou Jhunshan Market had already a history of 34 years, it was privately owned, there was plan to reconstruct it, but it might because the condition was not settled, so the reconstruction couldn’t be carried out. The whole family of the neighborhood chief was very cordial, his wife invited us to eat banana and mineral water, the neighborhood chief infused tea for us to drink, he told us we might ask his help if there were any matters in the future. The neighborhood chief sold rice before, but he had to pay tax for rice selling, the grocery and supermarket needn’t to pay taxes for it, so he no longer sold it anymore.

Title: Experience on buying foods, appointing time with the shopkeeper
Date: December 31, 2007 (Sunday)

In order to interview the stalls in Luchou Jhunshan Market, I had to change a place to buy foods, in fact I was a little unaccustomed, because as a mother I was rather always able to pinch pennies, and the food price here was comparatively high. A small Korea vegetable cost NT$4, which was the most expensive since I became mother; one milk fish belly cost NT$50, while in the Sanlu Market the entire fish cost NT$50 and the size was very large; one catty of small tomato cost NT$35, which was also the most expensive I bought in my life, in Sanlu Market one catty costeNT$20 and was very delicious. At supper my husband shouted all the time “it is not very fresh” when he was frying the milk fish belly. I remembered my colleague in south teacher Guo once said, if the stuff we ate in Taiwan was as expensive as that in   Japan, there wouldn’t be so many fat people. So would it be less extravagant if the stuff was a little expensive? But it was a burden to the people with comparatively low income. Finally, we appointed to interview daughter of the fish shopkeeper at 12: 00 at noon on New Year’s day of the year 2007, and listened to the story of the vegetable shopkeepers at 2: 30 in the afternoon.

Title: Experience on listening to stories of vegetable shopkeepers

The vegetable stalls had a large range, so both the beginning and conclusion of one day took times. The shopkeeper was very humorous, so I felt his family must be very harmonious. Although selling vegetable was very toilsome, the profit was high, which made it occur to me the ideas to become a vegetable seller too. Presently a college graduate earned NT$20,000 one month, a graduate of research institutions earned NT$30,000, a vegetable seller was a boss himself, moreover it needn’t worry about the moving externally or layoff by the company, who knew was it a good trade? But the premise was to build up your body, then you could have strength to deliver goods. The shopkeeper was very optimistic, so I felt he was not as senior as his actual age.

Title: The market stall keepers’ disposal on customers’ “failing to pay”
Recorder: Shiou-yen Chang

Market On January 7, last Sunday, I came to Sanlu Market of Jihsian Road to buy food, I saw an old woman took a bag of mushroom, quickly drove bicycle to go way, but immediately she was seized by the son of the stall keeper, the son of the stall keeper said “you are the second to be caught today, fine NT$500 will be fine, or I will send you to the police office.” I saw the old women threw away NT$500 and quickly left.

I thought back that the fish shopkeeper was truly honest and kind, I remembered he told small children: “if someone steals your fish, you shouldn’t tell the customer you steal my fish, you should say it seems your fish hasn’t paid.”.  Stealing is no doubt not right, but too drastic a manner would make one embarrassed, I rather appreciated fish shopkeeper’s tolerance.

Title: Wisdom of worldly people

The fish shopkeeper once said he sold fish because it was unconstraint, you needn’t be controlled by others, and could be boss yourself, he disdained some officers, for example, the Chongyang Road was such big, it was actually curved!
Controlled The candy shopkeeper was a native Luchou resident, he was a dark horse, he knew and encouraged us to urge the coming of “Deng Lijun Park”, enhanced the cultural level of Luchou. He thought the common folks lived such a free life, the officers would only think about how to gain extra advantage of the common folks and how to calculate common folks.
