Training program 1: What is a picture book?

 　  Because we had to create a picture book, this program mainly introduced the basic structure of the book and what we needed to include. The emphasis had to be on the pages inside of the book. Therefore, the topic of how to create them was divided into several sections.

      When we first received the handout, we found many terms that we did not understand.  The instructions in the handout did not seem too difficult,, but it was easy to overlook or forget how to follow one of them while we were painting.  In fact, the instructions in these handouts were all quite simple.  We referred to the instructions and repeated the steps as we painted, which helped to leave usdeeper impressions of the steps.

       We looked forward to drawing rough sketches the most.  But instead of creating the pictures ourselves, we referred to pictures in other picture books and traced them.  Since the main purpose was to teach us about sizes, lines of movement, and the proportion of the characters, it was quite fun.  However, we were inexperienced, so a lot of the work was corrected and it seemed like quite a mess.

       Through this lesson, we made a few important decisions.  1) The main device to use for the picture books will be color pencils.  2) The method of “bleeding” will be used for the picture book, so color will absorb into all of the paper. 3) The person responsible for the rough sketch on the character’s proportions must find the  pictures that might be used.

Training program 2: 11 Little Red Hats?

　　Once everyone learned about the story, we tried to write the story in our own words.

      The story went like this:

　　One day, Grandma had recovered from her cold and she wanted to visit Little Red Hat.  She prepared sandwiches and a juice for her visit.  When she was walking in the forest, she suddenly met the Wolf and the Wolf said to her, “Where are you going?”  Grandma told him that she was visiting Little Red Hat.  The Wolf said, “Do you know how to get there?” Grandma said, “Yes I do! All I need to do is follow this path that leads me to Little Red Hat’s home.  However, my granddaughter likes flowers very much, so I would like to get some for her.”

       When the Wolf heard this, he immediately told Grandma. “I know where the beautiful flowers are! You follow this path to the right, turn left and you will see a land with a beautiful garden.” Grandma was very happy to hear this, so she thanked the Wolf and then walked to the right.

       Meanwhile, the Wolf quickly ran to Little Red Hat’s house but she was not home because she was playing in the forest.  When the Wolf arrived at the house, only Little Red Hat’s mother was at home.  The Wolf knocked on the door and ate Little Red Hat’s mother when she opened the door.

　　After that, the Wolf hid in Little Red Hat’s house.  At this time, Grandma had gathered the flowers and arrived at the house.  When she walked inside, the Wolf ate her as well.

      Um….Since the pictures we drew were ugly and marked everywhere by the teacher (because there were many problems with our pictures), we only put up two of them for display.

         1.  All of the pages were the same size – was it possible to shrink any of the pages to combine           two pages into one?

       2. Were there any pages that could be enlarged?

Training program 3: challenging the picture book!

 Since our characters were people, we tried to “draw people” first!
